As alot of you 1st MP works with the 3rd MP, I wanted to post this. Trying to help another Marine locate the famliy of Capt Ben McDermott. The Capt has served with 3rd Recon but on this toure he was with the 3rd. He was KIA from incomming.:9-6-1969. I do have a photo if anyone interested. Semper Fi
I am trying to locate family (wife, son, daughter) of a Capt. Bernard A. McDermott III who was KIA on Sept. 6, 1969 during a rocket attack on 3rd MP Bn.
I have personal reasons for locating his kids (adults now). All I know was that he was listed as being from Nashville.
I would appreciate any help with this issue. I am deaf now and rely solely on email for communications, unless I'm face-to-face with someone I can read their lips.

Ben's wife remarried years after his death and I do not know her married name. Ben's Sister was Alie Lou McDermott, likely married as she is not now in the Nashville area. Both parents died years ago and to the best of my knowledge, no relatives remain.....I have a strong clue: Doug(las) Jeffords, a classmate of Ben's and mine (he is a retired USN 06) kept contact with Ben right up to his date of death......Doug was on a ship but with the Nashville connection, maintained some contact up to his KIA....I will try and get Doug's info for yoou...He lives in Arizona, retired and attended our 45th HS reunion....Doug retired in 1993 and I retired in 2000 but I was an airdale and had no contact with Ben after 5Jan68. I wish I could help you more but it is as if the McDermott family was wiped off the earth. AliLou I will try and get through the High School alumni Association. We all went to the same Nashville High School (Hillsboro High) and she was as I recall 2 years older than Ben which would have made her about 66 or 67 now.......Ben was very close with my family right up to college and active status. As I recall, Ben went PLC while I was NROTC at Vanderbilt, Marine selection. As you will likely assume, aviation was very displaced against the grunts unless one happened to be a FAC......I was first a Jolly Roger flying F-4's then went into AV-8A's and B's (Harrier)....Carrier JFK but trained on the USS Ranger.......I will try and contact some of our Nashville classmates who may have post 1969 information.......I didn't learn of Ben's death until 1970 from my sister who married Navy and lived in Scotland and Seattle......wish I could of more help......I had known Ben from about age 10 up to age 21-22 and after August 1969, all communications ended. I traced Ben through 8th and Eye and got only a partial report, thinking maybe the mission precluded any exacting information. My number in Nashville is 615-333-1250 and my cellphone is 615 480-3074 in case I need be called........meanwhile, I will check farther for you......Regards
Mike, a farther clue (my, how the memory fades) Ben's Dad was BA McDermott, Jr. a graduate of Notre Dame, class of 1953.......the very last communication I had from Ben was with him attached to Alpha Co. 3rd Recon Bn, 3rd Marine Div........I might also suggest Vice Admiral John Mazach, (ret'd) (at one time head of Naval Aviation, now with General Dynamo in Norfolk) be contacted as he was a classmate (2 years behind us) who retired in 1999-2000. It's very possible because of the HS connection, John might have more info than any of us.....he makes my 06 seem tiny.......I am holding out for Ben's sister, Allie Lou who I have known for years but not having seen since the 1960's.......I have a letter from Ben, dated April 14, 1969 and his KIA date as 6Sep69....artillery hit......
